i thiiiiink the All-Stars and/or the GBA re-release had somethin like that, but iirc it was just a port of the Mario Bros. arcade game

It's in the original game too in a slightly different form. If either player presses A at the moment both occupy same space, battle starts

You can lose/gain those bonus cards from the end of a level, and it becomes the winner's turn after, even if it was just their turn before

No there's a Mario Bros mode for "trading" end-of-level Cards in the NES original too.
