in splitscreen wireless, yeah. so for instance, if you have two Switches and 4 players, everyone needs Pro Controllers or must use 1 Joy-Con

i wonder if it's a bluetooth issue… wireless play supports up to 8 switches, and if they allowed 2 joycons per player, maybe it's too many?

That'd be a possible 16 wireless Joycon, not being able to handle that many near by is reasonable excuse.
