there's a part of the CPU (the MMU) that mediates memory accesses (kind of like a gameshark inside your processor) and decides what to do depending on the addresses at play. the OS uses this facility to make applications think the memory layout is different than it actually is

It basically uses free space on your hard drive to store excess RAM data.
The 128 TB is a virtual limit. If you run out of disk space in reality you're hosed.
Yeah that what guy said. 128 TB is 2^47 which is a pretty weird number of bits, but someone somewhere decided using the full 64 wouldn't cut it.
