‘Common phrases’ that spread though use are literally memetic by their own existence as a ‘common phrase’ that many people use. I don’t know what hair you could be splitting if you don’t believe a memetic idea shared by millions of people is somehow ‘not a meme.’

Yeah that’s crazy, if the definition of meme is any idea that spreads through communication, then all language and ideas EVER fall under that umbrella and the word “meme” becomes meaningless.

Literally by definition since they are culturally memetic they are memes. That’s the pedantic Merriam-Webster argument. My real argument is that people say it as a goof. The CTH people say it all the time in the form of a meme on the show; if it’s a meme to a community it counts.
