Evangelion’s release on Netflix being met with gatekeepy discourse about changes exempting it from being a “true” version sucks It’s a lack of perspective not to understand that even a 95% complete version of the show being available to a massive new audience is a net positive

its not about gatekeeping tho, its about retaining the full context of a legitimately significant piece of media

it's a net positive for sure. i really can't wait to see the results of eva being able to shape more people's minds. but it's also hard to turn off the part of your brain where you want the 95% to be 100%. especially if you spend all your time honing taste / critical ability etc

the thing is that, legalities aside, the 100 percent is very easily available online and has been for years...and within that context only putting up 95 percent feels like a poor argument for netflix as a source for anime...does exposure matter when that exposure’s inaccurate?

is it really 'inaccurate' tho? or is it just different from the version we're used to? the new English version is by all accounts far more faithful to the original Japanese script than the translation we grew up with

translation wise it's not a problem imo. i don't believe it's ever possible to translate even one word into another language perfectly. the ending theme thing is what disappointed me. probably nitpicking, but music is music

dorky example, but would people be okay with 2001: a space odyssey suddenly missing blue danube? Probably not.

fully agree with ya here. i have no idea what it costs to license Fly Me To The Moon, but i strongly believe Netflix should’ve paid it, considering it’s gonna be most people’s first exposure to maybe the most important anime of all time
