my thing is like... i'd HAPPILY pay them money for cosmetics or whatever, but knowing the gameplay is intentionally unbalanced by these gacha mechanics is kinda game-ruining for me

In my experience it hasn't been bad. You gain player level pretty quickly so hearts aren't much of a problem and you only use 1 per race. You can also still get first and have no extra item slot of speed enhancers.

I know how this goes. Players level slower and slower and the need for microtransactions grows bigger with time
