In a murder mystery, you know who gets murdered at the beginning. From there you build the backstory, the motives, the suspects, and then the denouement.

That's not the analogy, though. You know who the victim is at the beginning - but saying who the *murderer* is up front would suck all the tension from everything that followed. I think this story works better if you discover the name the same time I did!
