few other details: - this happens across all recording software, not just Audacity - only occurs with the XLR mic i have plugged into my XENYX 302 mixer, NOT my USB mics (i.e. my webcam mic) - this sucks and makes me want to throw my computer in the trash (not helpful i know)

Use literally anything other than Audacity. This DAW is way way better and is *free* like WinRAR in that it's an unlimited trial https://www.reaper.fm/download.php

just tried recording a test track with Reaper instead of Audacity and it's still happening
seems like Audacity isn't the issue - something is adjusting my gain regardless of softwarepic.twitter.com/HKuOcercEJ

just tried that - nope! the fact that the gain softly/gradually gets cranked up/down rather than cutting out entirely has me convinced that it's software related, not a short

i have this issue with sennheiser, but you have to download a program with those which will automatically turn on noise cancellation. i dont know what headphones you have, but maybe a similar issue?

i understand what is happening but i'd only be able to help if i was at the computer. it's one of those odd things. it's like it has an auto gain control going on that is just fucked and lowers the mic volume in tandem with the received volume. It just doesn't go up quickly.
