I dunno man - I'm callin' it: Detective Pikachu will be really good. Not trying to do an origin story. Not reinventing the wheel, just doing a simple set-up to what looks like an epic conclusion.
can't figure out why i find Detective Pikachu upsetting in a 'bad' way but Sonic 2019 upsetting in a 'good' way... maybe it's because being a Sonic fan despite 20 years of bad games has trained my brain to already see Sonic as a punchline

I don't think the sonic movie'll be bad. I'm kinda expecting them to lean into the absurdity of it a bit, considering everything we know about it so far. It wouldn't work if they did it straight faced. That said, I still think detective Pikachu will probably be pretty good too.
