there was like a 15-year stretch where every piece of Nintendo hardware had backwards compatibility out of the box now, if you ask nicely and pay them $4 a month, Nintendo might let you play some doodoo NES games. what happened, lol

All Wii Games were playable from the start on the Wii U and however clunky it may be, the Virtual Console was the first major, official emulator creation. It's less about their video game preservation and more about being high strung over intellectual property possession.

I will admit at this particular point in time, it is reasonable to argue in Microsoft's favor, but, in my opinion, they haven't yet hit the high point that Nintendo once did.
