A quick thread. This article has been freaking people — https://www.vice.com/en_au/article/wjbzzy/your-phone-is-listening-and-its-not-paranoia … — and I understand why, because in 2018 it seems any horrible thing is possible. The author confirmed to me via DM that he was doing his test on an iPhone. He'd talk towards the phone, without launching any app, and saw his ads change. BUT: on iOS, any app recording you in the background triggers a giant red symbol to appear in the upper-left corner!pic.twitter.com/eWIwC2pVcp

In other words, if you're using iOS, YOU WILL KNOW if an app is recording your audio secretly on your phone. If Facebook was doing this, the corner of your phone would be red 24/7. There's no way around it. (Except maybe if your phone is jailbroken.)

So what happened to the author? Don't know. I'm sure he's not being deceitful, so it could be as simple as correlation not equalling causation. But I do know this: what's described isn't possible. No app on your iPhone is recording you secretly without you being aware of it.
