I did stop playing at that point but apparently you can use the map to teleport back to the ship. So that’s something?
ah shit, that's good to know! still tedious, but at least it's only half as tedious now

Yeah it’s still a weirdly unintuitive moment. They don’t prompt or tell you. Plus they hide a extra health thing in one of the plants before you cross but they could have made it so much more user friendly.
