Do you seek out new scientist to follow for such tweets or do you rely on the twitter network you already have? Do you prompt scientists on twitter for comments or wait for them to initiate? (curious about the changing way that people get their science news....)

Both. I like finding new people to follow and look for what people are talking about. Slowly accumulated over time. And it’s not the only way I find stories. Just a nice way. If I’m interested in something I’ll reach out over email.

I would also here put in a plug for http://researchgate.net . It is a fabulous community for researchers with a publication record to both collaborate and to access papers, research, and researchers outside of the rancorous wider Internet.
