reporters operate on a "can't unring that bell" principle. Once we learn about something, we're not going to pretend like it doesn't exist.
sure, if a scientist tells me their paper isn't ready for a bright spotlight, I'll prob pass. But others might not. And...
results are more likely to be misinterpreted if the scientists can't talk about them. ..
I get a lot of story ideas from seeing what papers scientists are sharing with one another and talking about on twitter / social media...
often preprints are getting talked about because they're particularly newsy or are helpful in understanding wtf is happening in the world.
and if you can't talk about them beyond your academic circles, the rest of us are missing out!
