just curious. Did they get anything really wrong? Or just ignored some stuff? I haven't listened to this yet.
1/ @B_resnick Mischel critique of traits is dated, doesn't address modern understanding of traits or account for data since 1968
2/ @B_resnick Ross gets it wrong off the bat by putting situations "versus" traits as if they're zero sum, misinterprets Milgram thru that
3/ @B_resnick Idea of stability residing in environments is intriguing but not well supported, vs lots of evidence for heritable stability
4/ @B_resnick And finally, totally missed a shit-ton of research on personality stability and change; Mischel is a tiny part of that area
(FWIW I read the excerpt on NPR site, didn't listen, possible there's more in the podcast)
Got it wrong. Interviewed 2 people w/ very extreme views, doubt you'd find 3 personality researchers who agree w/ them.
Ross recapitulates unvarnished situationist. It's actually saddening to listen to it.
I think you hit your "s" key when you meant "m"
damn "stop being a troll" autocorrect.
maybe both maddening and saddening?
"Ignoring some stuff" is putting it lightly. I think ignoring 30 yrs of research is basically getting it wrong.
Its as if the reporters decided the field stopped after Mischel's book in 1968. 1/2
The reporters had a story they wanted to tell and got some psychologists to say what they needed to back it up. 2/2
