The solution isn't necessarily just "o let's buy natural fibers, like cotton." Synthetic fabric clothes are affordable clothes. We don't need environmental contentiousness to be another luxury good.

There's research ongoing into how washing machines can better catch plastic fibers before they enter water treatment. But, for now, many of us could probably stand to just buy fewer clothes. And only wash them when they're truly gnarly (which saves water, & energy too).
