A lot of the conversation about plastic pollution concerns things we throw out, like straws, cups, and cigarette butts. But our clothes pollute the oceans just by caring for them.

The solution isn't necessarily just "o let's buy natural fibers, like cotton." Synthetic fabric clothes are affordable clothes. We don't need environmental contentiousness to be another luxury good.

There's research ongoing into how washing machines can better catch plastic fibers before they enter water treatment. But, for now, many of us could probably stand to just buy fewer clothes. And only wash them when they're truly gnarly (which saves water, & energy too).

Plastic gets in the ocean from commercial fishing, tsunamis, and an absence of waste handling standards in developing nations. Also, cotton production comes with a whole host of environmental issues. You've picked just about the smallest idea to worry about.
