This is... Very upsetting.

I hear you. The trick is to not take it as a rejection. It’s the hardest job I’ve ever had. It’s also the coolest. The point is not to upset though. It is to encourage folks to keep at it.

This young academic says...why bother then

Thank you. I have been submitting quite a lot and this is actually encouraging. What did you find differentiates the successes? More on target /specific funding agencies? Extra review of the grants?
-
It's hard to know. There are a couple of experiments in there with respect to strategy. One of them was two grants almost identical in team, science, approach, but one in disease and the other in normal tissue. One scored 1% and the other, 53%. Same basic grant.

Provided time is a valuable commodity in our profession, would you agree that the best strategy is to set a grant quality threshold way above most people recommend and save some time to multiply the number of applications? Because it looks all a big lottery game to me
-
Never, ever submit garbage. Always submit your best work. It is a lottery game to an extent. But your work also has to match up with the trends. Fashion comes and goes in science, and I’ve had to chase disease for instance to keep the funding coming in.

Can you add a third color? Perhaps blue for "should have been funded but the reviewers obviously didnt read it right"?

ALL THE RED WOULD BE BLUE! <rueful laugh>
