The Botswana Government has also enquired from the US Government through the Ambassador, to clarify if Botswana is regarded as a “shithole” country given that there are Botswana nationals residing in the US, and also that some of Batswana may wish to visit the US.

I feel sorry for the US Ambassador. He/she is probably as outraged as you are, and very embarrassed too, but his/her job is to represent his/her country currently led by a nasty spoiled child - impossible job to do well.
He is a very nice guy. We are waiting for statement from him regarding the matter.
If he's a very nice guy, then he must be utterly mortified by Trump's antics.

In his position, I'd just say, "President Trump did not mention Botswana and therefore does not regard your country as a shithole. We look forward to continuing our cordial relations, etc, etc, etc ...." Something completely anodyne and meaningless like that.
