There will be no access to the website or ability to upload records from the BirdTrack app from 9am-6pm on Wednesday 5th February due to updates to the database. We apologise for the inconvenience. You will still be able to add records via the app, just not upload.

For we went off to our local lake and my other half took these photos of one of the curlews there - such beautiful birds & their song is magical, I LOVE them. 😍

  9. 2/2 The LBB Gulls on the other hand have seen an increase in numbers at Hayle. The highest tally for this Low Tide survey for me is 420 on 05/02/2011, highest altogether is 550 in 1999. 420 was also my highest total so it came as a nice surprise today to record 1324

  10. 1/2 Just completed the fourth and final count for this season Low Tide count of the Hayle estuary. Wader and duck numbers have dropped significantly and my first colour ringed Curlew was too distant to be identified.

It’s amazingly rewarding to do counts, you never know what you’ll see. If there’s a vacant site near you seriously consider taking it on, you won’t regret it, plus you’ll be helping science!

This morning I heard a green woodpecker down in our bottom paddock - that's very unusual here, only 1 other in 16yrs. I'm hoping perhaps he's enjoying our unimproved pasture that I've been busily leaving in peace over the last decade.

Starlings in the UK are in decline. So much so, they're part of our project: a book highlighting the 67 species on the UK Red List. Buy the book and support and here:

How about this for something truly amazing - an estimated 400,000 - 450,000 Baikal Teal heading out to feed this evening in South Korea. What is even more amazing is that this is most of the world population, wintering in place!

Turnstones,a rare sight on our trips, seen rock hopping in the harbour. Also seen? Kingfishers, herons, egrets, cormorants, shags, oyster catchers, curlews, sandpipers, little grebes and almost no human beings! Perfect winter paddling.
