Can someone calculate how fast Walter Johnson threw by analyzing film?

even in this slo-mo clip the ball seems to fly out of his hands! I'd guess he threw in the mid to high 90's but I have no idea....

The Big Train had great mechanics; cool windup. You’d think more modern players would emulate it.

I think if more guys emulated it, there'd be fewer injuries. I don't know for sure since I'm not a doctor or baseball historian, but it seems that guys from that era didn't have torn UCLs or other arm-related injuries despite higher pitch counts and fewer days of rest.

I realize everything is relative, but, assuming he was one of, if not *the* fastest guy of his time ... man ... I don't think a righty could get very comfortable in the box against this guy since the pitches had to seem like they were coming out of the 3rd base coach's box.

“The first time I faced him, I watched him take that easy windup. And then something went past me that made me flinch. The thing just hissed with danger. We couldn’t touch him … every one of us knew we’d met the most powerful arm ever turned loose in a ball park.” Ty Cobbpic.twitter.com/sqsADImuNg
