5K & 10K seem to have real-world practical benefits proportionate to time spent training. Never found a good reason to run longer distances.

For me it's always the last 500 m, 'cause I floor it, like an idiot.

Every run? I also speed up then, but only enough to make up for however far behind the target time I am. I try to not need to do so at all.

Just about. I do try to stay very steady and right outside of the red zone for most of the run. But it's too much fun to run fast(er).
