Hmm, I've always interpreted it as FIPS 180-4, which is truncated 512 with its own special IV.
Ed25519 splits a SHA-512 hash in half & uses the top half & bottom half for different things. Effectively 2 different SHA-512/256s at once.

I should have written using /only/ the right-most bits. Such a waste to compute digest bits and throw them away. Even git gets that right.
