cancelling a bunch of conferences is not going to hurt Trump or gov - they'd probably like fewer academics/"elites" visiting

They matter in aggregate, because of the economic impact. Fewer confs -> less revenue -> layoffs -> higher unemployment.

Conversly, image every conf moves to the US. Higher revenue -> more jobs -> campaign fun promise fulfilled -> reelection.

Anyway, I don't think the solution is canceling. I think conferences should consider maybe dual-site hosting, in/out of US.
