Wouldn't that be a great way to do CopperheadOS? I'd strongly consider kickstarter finding a new version of CopperheadOS.
TBH, as a phone user I don't really care much. Being able to read the source is great. if I can tinker & rebuild, awesome!

It allows modification / redistribution and the sources are all available, just not "commercial usage" without licensing.
-
Planning on adjusting the model to require payment for our builds of the code for the first year that devices are available too.
-
Actually, Kickstarter would work great for you. Until the Kickstarter is fully funded, you'd just work on your partner stuff.
-
Could do a kickstarter for something like public availability of Pixel releases. It's just a lot easier to sell it as a product.
-
Seems more fair too... people paying for it if they want it, rather than what we have now: a few people donate a lot and most 0.
-
IDK. I personally probably wouldn't fund *just* that. I'd want to see a plan for non-trivial improvements not already done.
-
Wouldn't be able to commit to keeping around features though, only implementing them. The base it's built on keeps changing.
-
Isn't that due partially to understaffing, which is what crowdfunding would help fix, presumably.

I mean, I just bought an iPhone, and most of the people I know working on FOSS use iPhones, so FOSS seems to be worth ~$0.
-
Switching the license really ended up increasing the donations by drawing attention to the fact that the work needs funding.
-
It being FOSS didn't result in contributions to it, and anyway people could contribute to AOSP (as we do) which helps us.
-
Really don't think most people care about the license being truly free. A tiny minority are very noisy about it.
-
People do seem to care about the code being available, which will remain true. The license provides peace of mind about that.
