It doesn't cover the ongoing costs though. Kickstarter makes sense to create a product that's then going to be sold to others.

I think your current model makes more sense for you. Most projects would probably need some funding to get to where you're at.

It's not FOSS though, it's open-source under a non-commercial usage license. It really depends on it being that way.

TBH, as a phone user I don't really care much. Being able to read the source is great. if I can tinker & rebuild, awesome!

It allows modification / redistribution and the sources are all available, just not "commercial usage" without licensing.

Planning on adjusting the model to require payment for our builds of the code for the first year that devices are available too.

Actually, Kickstarter would work great for you. Until the Kickstarter is fully funded, you'd just work on your partner stuff.

Could do a kickstarter for something like public availability of Pixel releases. It's just a lot easier to sell it as a product.

Crowdfunding could work for us. It would require a substantial investment of time and may not work out well though.
