Today's awful (and useless) C fact: int8_t et al aren't really the portable ones; if you /really/ care, use int_least8_t or int_fast8_t.
Shouldn't somebody make a proposal to fix the standard to require uint8_t to be treated like unsigned char w.r.t. this.

It's actually very useful to have a TBAA-unique byte-sized type. I suspect (u)int8_t can't be that type, though.
