Soon we'll have RSA verify in 100% Rust except asm Montgomery multiplication. ECDSA verify in 100% Rust except asm field/group ops.

One important goal is to improve or maintain perf of OpenSSL. I've not seen any compiler in any lang that can match OpenSSL asm.

I think it is clear that that could be done. I think sustainability of the project is the most pressing issue to address now.

It needs to find a userbase that can afford the maintenance costs and who save more money than they spend on it.
