    And now to my email.. how do I deal with messages that start: happy new year, I hope you’re well rested, but can you please do x for me now? Do I work super-hard to deal with all messages immediately as they come in, or do I defer and suffer later?

    I cut down my tweeting over the holiday, and I’m finding it hard to restart. I even managed to get to the gym before my first tweet of 2020. What is the twitter equivalent to endorphins? Likes?

    Interesting interplay between (group) social identity & (physical) spaces in which it is (perceived to be) found. Got me thinking about relationships between spaces & places, the latter giving spaces more meaning & thus a richer unit of analysis.

    People are more likely to racially stereotype spaces than people (eg Black spaces are impoverished) making middle-class Black space invisible. This may explain why journalists do interviews of the middle class in spaces that exclude black representation.

    Thread. An unusual appliance of science (allometry)... PS: in case you don’t know about allometry:

    Am I the only one to be confused by baby Yoda's morphology? Compared to old Yoda, it does have proportionately larger eyes, but a seemingly tiny/flat brain case. This differs from the ontogenetic allometry in humans (and all mammals?), whose babies have larger and rounder heads.

    Luckily this debate is also being recorded ... But surely the debate is a longstanding one that has already been had, and on balance we need both approaches, and would benefit from hybrid approaches?

    An excellent thread on privacy ...

    Privacy scholars and activists were worried about surveillance capitalism at least as far back as 1995, when DoubleClick was founded. We tried to warn the public before it was too late, but mostly failed, at least in the U.S. What went wrong?

    Excellent advice.

    Writing is an essential skill for scholars. It took me years to realize that one doesn’t get better simply by writing more, just as you can’t become a singer by singing in the bathroom. You have to take time to learn the principles and practice without the pressure of deadlines.
