The western Caribbean Sea has become a powder keg over the past couple of weeks, as we see in this animation of OHC (ocean heat content). OHC is a depth-integrated energy of the water which is more useful than SST (sea surface temp) for intense and/or slow-moving hurricanes.pic.twitter.com/cHz0RhcWpu
OHC is calculated from the surface down to the depth of the 26C isotherm. Category 3 hurricanes are found over an average of 45 kJ/cm2 (and 81 for Cat5s). That's concerning, especially considering how strong Sam became over OHC values around a half of what's in the western Caribbean sea.
