Nothing to see here... just heading into October with a hot tub in the western Caribbean. http://bmcnoldy.rsmas.miami.edu/tropics/sectors/ …pic.twitter.com/oyYWFXOdhJ

Does anyone make anomaly plots of the OHC? I know that area is always really high but the expanse of the 150+ values seems pretty large this year.

That is I something that would be nice to have... looked for it as part of a smart-tide-prediction project that's ongoing. If it were to exist, it would be made on Virginia Key (between PhOD and RSMAS, it *should* exist!).

So why has there been so little TC genesis nearby, mostly African storms? Why is this more an October phenomenon?

There's not a great source of spin in that area prior to this time of year; easterly waves tend to be used up by the time they get there. AND, the Caribbean Low Level Jet has its annual minimum in Oct, resulting in decreased wind shear. Here's a climatology I made some time ago:pic.twitter.com/qoJwWNjM5i
