The UK is a racist country, and no amount of pretending will unchange that fact. We have a racist University system, we have a racist approach to engaging with outdoor spaces, and the list continues.

Also it's not up to you to "see first hand" how these racist facets of our country impact people who are victims of the oppression & marginalisation, if marginalised people are speaking up - please believe them. It's extremely brave of them to share on these topics.

Each time you write or say: "oh but that also happens to me" or "did that really happen?" it is an extra layer of oppression and excuse that gives oxygen to the ever present UK white supremacy.

And yes - dear readers - everyone has done this, and will likely continue to question the presence of racism in our society. Instead of making excuses and making the situation worse - do some reading & take a moment to reflect and be a better person tomorrow than you were today.

I agree that racism is prevalent. As individuals we can all work to be more aware of it, challenge it, and promote diversity. But it’s hard to know how best to change wider society.

Start with your friends and families. Start with your place of work. Fix something. Leave it better than what you found. You don't have to fix the world single handed.

I recently heard the US expression "A hit dog hollers" for the first time. While I don't like the metaphor (don't hit your dogs) I think the sentiment hits it on the nose. If you hear "the UK is a racist country" & feel attacked, maybe question why it's personal for you.
