Why is this important? People have individual identities. Their work is only a facet of this. Even when contextually bound around work, a students ideas and contributions are far greater than them simply being an extended pair of hands.

And even on twitter - where the character limit makes things harder to contract - saying something damaging is worse than saying nothing. So make some effort to highlight collaboration and individual identity of the students who we work with.

Oh and I am totally judging your group dynamics and your internal thoughts about the people who work with you if you are using language such as "my student did X" - you are probably insecure, or lazy, or taking undue credit for the work of others. Fix it.

The power imbalance between student and supervisor/advisor is difficult enough, without people enshrining this further through their casual use of possessive language with respect to people who they are collaborating with (and training to be better than them).

Also there is a subtle and important difference when a student in the group refers to their supervisor as "their boss" or "their supervisor" - the person with less power is describing the relationship, often within context.

In case you happen across this chain of thoughts - it would be good if you could have a peek at the blog piece that has come from it too. This is especially important if you are currently rubbing your hands with glee in the abuse you can throw my way.https://twitter.com/BMatB/status/1209388953939431426 …

Totally agree... I also make sure to remind my team they work *with* me, not *for* me.

And still, you use "my" team. "my" has very different meanings depending on the context (my phone, my country, my mother, my boss, my mayor...). "my PhD student" is a well-defined context, very different from all the others, implying a different relationship.

Not sure about this. "My student" is the same as "my advisor", no meaning of possession and goes both ways. "a student in my group" would otherwise be even "worse", implying that you own not only a student, but a group.
-
"My group" is not a lone circle on a Venn diagram though - it overlaps with other groupings...
