I want to thank everyone who helped me put together this essay. Ultimately it's not technology that limits disabled people, it's how we are treated by society. We should be able to decide if we want to be cyborgs--and respected either way!

Fascinating read, thank you for the insight. Am I wrong in assuming that until open source support comes along allowing users to self-tweak their new-found tools, you’ll be stuck at the mercy of heavy industry trying to protect their investments?

There actually are a number of 3D-printed, low-cost startup arms, as well as somewhat "homemade" prosthetic arm endeavors, most kinda flimsy, and not extremely useful especially for people like me who have at least part of their arm. I think the biggest issues are fit and control
