200 people crammed into last night & didn’t want to leave. Watching Black men’s theatre group enacting mental health issues and suicide risk as it affects them. Great post-show discussion/engagement. Need more.

I recently met The Wonderful Bailey Sisters, cover stars of . From 1970 in Clapham (by Neil Kenlock) to 2019 (by George Walfall). As young women they radiated power & personality. 50 years later it has been fully realised.

Went to see Tayari Jones, author of An American Marriage . She was So funny. We all fell a little bit in love. “I told my editor, 'An American Marriage,' sounded like a novel about some white people in Connecticut experiencing an emotion”.

A stimulating event with Tayari Jones: thought-provoking, humorous, tender, compassionate. Her discussion illuminated the many layers of her latest novel.

Lovely event two days ago in my old stomping ground of Brixton - built in the 1890s & still the soul of the community - with the wonderful novelist & the one-and-only Tim O'Dell hosting & great to see some old friends there.

: there are several black British women publishing successful fiction right now (e.g. ) but still only a handful are achieving that level of success & 1000s of books are published a year in UK so much more needs to change

Both authors talk about the (slow) increase in diversity of book prize judges that means black + diverse writers are better known. But there's still a long way to go & it's sad it has taken so long for a British BW to win . They both want to bring other writers with them

When she started to write she wanted to explore the diversity of black British womanhood and see how many characters she could fit in one book! These 12 women do NOT represent all black British women, there are 800,000 BW in UK and they are all unique!
