There's no denying that S.F. has abnormally high property crime rates. But has the city really seen a spike in shoplifting during the pandemic? According to police department data, no. In fact, shoplifting incidents are lower than they were pre-pandemichttps://www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/Is-shoplifting-rising-in-San-Francisco-Here-s-16272907.php …

Ask Walgreens and CVS why they are closing. Chronicle reported that here back in May. These are profit oriented enterprises and shoplifting losses are untenable. Reported shoplifting data is a joke.https://www.sfchronicle.com/local-politics/article/Out-of-control-Organized-crime-drives-S-F-16175755.php …

When asked back in 2019, Walgreens said they were planning on closing ~3% of their US stores to shift their market presence and increase margins

12 out of 155 Bay Area CVS stores are in San Francisco but these stores account for 1/4 of shoplifting. Hmm…https://www.mercurynews.com/2021/06/16/thefts-at-san-francisco-walgreens-stores-four-times-the-average-of-companys-u-s-stores …

The veiled "this isn't an issue" explanation just doesn't pass the test of what people see happening in SF. Stores closing while shoplifting up (likely it is increasingly under reported) and a DA that isn't focused on property crime will all end up lumped together.

We have decades of documentation of how terrible people are at estimating crime rates, and it always skews high. There's no reason to think lockdown would ameliorate these perceptions vs. heighten themhttps://fivethirtyeight.com/features/many-americans-are-convinced-crime-is-rising-in-the-u-s-theyre-wrong/ …

People under stress make mistakes & misremember things, so the prudent thing would be to investigate & see if some real increase is contained within people estimates.
