Now 22 hours into the mission, the crew wake up from a well-earned sleep. They are flying at 5,638 fps (feet per second) and are 93,885 nautical miles (173,875 km) from Earth.

During breakfast, Michael Collins jokes that Buzz Aldrin is on his 19th bowl of oatmeal since they set out. They are 53 hours into the journey.

The crew enter the Lunar Module Eagle – the craft that will take Armstrong and Aldrin to the Moon. From inside they broadcast TV for over an hour and a half, and travel over 2,000 nautical miles.

The crew on the ground tell Armstrong they’ve got some special cheese from Wapakoneta, Ohio, his hometown. “I think you'll enjoy that. They make a fine brand of cheese,” Armstrong tells Houston.

The crew are read the day’s headlines from Earth. The ground team tell the crew: “You guys are dominating all the news back here on Earth. Even Pravda in Russia is headlining the mission and calls Neil, the Czar of the Ship. I think maybe they got the wrong mission.”

The crew are told that the Pope has arranged to watch the Moon landing in colour – even though the rest of Italy only have black-and-white TV sets. Interestingly, the Moon walk broadcast was in black and white, so it wouldn’t have made a difference.

They fly behind the Moon, and lose signal from the the ground. They take photos of the dark side of the Moon. “Look back there behind us, sure looks like a gigantic crater; look at the mountains going around it. During a period without signal, Buzz Aldrin moves into Eagle, the spacecraft which will take them to the Moon, and begins preparing powering up the craft. Armstrong joins him later – everything looks good to go.
