Yes I'm subtweeting Derek McInnes, what of it

The replies to this are like Scottish football transfer deadline day tweets. Lots of supporters who were demanding a 30-goals-a-season striker, slowly coming to terms with the fact they're getting a full back on loan from League Two (again)

Think a successful court challenge (which, again, is very much not part of Nicola Sturgeon's short-term plans) would ultimately be used as a political tool anyway, to persuade UKgov to do a deal. Ultimately I just don't see her holding a referendum without an agreement.

Feel like the whole thing about a court case creating the space for a legal referendum is a little bit of a red herring today - no, it hasn't been ruled out, but the tone of Nicola Sturgeon's speech was very much about persuasion and securing an agreed process in the 2014 mould

The frustration for some is that they've heard this speech before - below are extracts from Nicola Sturgeon's 2018 conference speech, with the exact same message. Her position hasn't changed, but it gets a little harder to sell each time - and she may give it a few more times yet

Letting test the indyref2 question after all has been a long time in the making, btw - but interesting that Nicola Sturgeon has ended up having to trade it away to her own supporters as a sign of progress, rather than to her opponents as a sign of compromise...

Judging by the state of my notifications the idea of just keeping up the political campaign without any movement on process is a hard sell for a lot of Yessers, but Nicola Sturgeon seems *very* firm in her belief that only a 2014-style agreed process will result in independence

There are good political reasons for Nicola Sturgeon to keep talking up indyref2020 - keeping up pressure on Boris Johnson, and keeping her supporters marching in step - but have to say it's looking all but certain not to happen this year. She's really playing a longer game.

Amazing watching the gaggle of journalists crowded around Joanna Cherry swell as folk seek reaction to Nicola Sturgeon’s speech. Even Mike Russell joined the back of the mob after a while

With her final answer, Nicola Sturgeon says it’s “perfectly realistic” to have a referendum this year, she’ll do all she can to deliver it, but we’re not at the point yet where it would be legal and legitimate - and we need to get there before it can be held.

Nicola Sturgeon says she rules out “an illegal or a wildcat referendum” - Catalonia shows “it won’t deliver independence”. Question of whether Holyrood could hold a *legal* vote hasn’t been answered in court, but her focus is on the political arguments for now

Nicola Sturgeon says she’ll feel a great deal of anger and a tinge of sadness at 23:00 tonight; Scotland “has made clear that it doesn’t want Brexit”. But she’ll also feel a “renewed sense of determination” to secure independence.

Nicola Sturgeon says she has a duty to be frank with her party - leadership isn’t about easy answers, it’s about being honest. A legal challenge “might actually set us back” - work to demonstrate sustained support for independence still has to be done, alongside the process fight

Nicola Sturgeon says she’s not ruling out a court challenge to underpin a consultative referendum, but it could go either way and her judgement atm is that the right thing to do is build the political argument

Nicola Sturgeon says “in a democracy, people must have the right to change their mind when circumstance change”. Not reasonable, rational or credible to claim that things haven’t changed since 2014. UK that existed back then ceases to exist at 23:00 tonight.

Nicola Sturgeon says she believes a referendum could happen this year - but very clear that she wants to deliver independence, not an “empty gesture”. “There’s no doubt in my mind that independence is coming.”

Q&A next: asked if she is accepting indyref2 won’t be held this year, Nicola Sturgeon says she’s not - “I believe there should be an independence this year, I believe it’s right to have that choice before the damage of Brexit is done to us”.

Nicola Sturgeon says the SNP has never been stronger, and “independence has never been closer”. Says the movement’s strength lies in “unity”...groundwork is laid, “now is the time to stay focused and resolute”.

Nicola Sturgeon says SNP will double campaign spending this year, with a focus on undecided voters. She says her side must “listen and engage respectfully” - need to mix passion with patience & respect. Must not stoop to level of Boris Johnson. “When they go low, we go high”

Nicola Sturgeon says persuading those who are not yet persuaded requires info and answers, but at its heart it needs open and frank discussion. “That is the task or every pro independence activist around our country” - “when we do the work, we can and we do win”.
