A Wolf whistle or a complimentry comment made in the street is not always harrassment, it empowers many women. There is a need to seperate the trivial from the serious.

There is not a women alive who has not been made to feel uncomfortable/nervous by a wolf whistle or receiving unsolicited "compliments" from a male stranger on her way home from work etc. You can tell, because that's why we start walking faster & pretend not to hear anything.

Absolutely. Just like guys who have been threatened at a pub or footy by someone and then leave or move to defuse/end a situation. My point is arseholes are everywhere we unfortunately cant make them illegal.

Conversely, I do believe that bartenders can kick those a-holes out of the pub. Of course you can't fix assholery by making it illegal. BUT, you can make it clear to those douche-canoes that we don't like it, & if they still can't respect that fact.. there are real consequences.

Absolutely it should be made clear to them. But how does walking quicker and pretending not to hear help?? Im no expert for sure, maybe we all need to change???

Because the first rule when walking alone as a woman is to never, ever engage.

Fair enough. Personal safety above all. Pls just remember even according to this article "most" women and girls experience no issues. And to the arseholes who who do cause issues?? Lets all call them out!!!

Most women/girls may have not experienced issues...yet. It doesn't happen to the same women every day. It's something that eventually will happen. Our mothers teach us how to handle these sorts of situations when we are growing up. But yes, always call out the a-holes.

"Being harassed has become normal"? Bless their hearts, I guess you missed the last few thousand years of history. (It's always been 'normal' & a problem) Still, kudos for finally acknowledging it. Baby steps.

the whole article is horrific in that women are exposed to, and have to contend with, this on an hourly, daily basis. one line in there '..block the viewing of pornography on public transport'...WTF? people do this?

I sat opposite a man on London tube watching pornography a few weeks back. He was intimidating and creepy. I saw porn on his phone in the reflection of the window.

Christ, terrible...can't even imagine how that was for you can't even think how they'd go about blocking it on public transportation.

What was as worrying is that the men sat next to him didn’t feel able / willing to call him out. I didn’t feel confident that I’d have support and remain safe. I expect he does it daily without being challenged.

when i lived in London i would be oblivious to everything around me on the Tube or bus - headphones in and book/ kindle on. not excusing their lack of support in anyway, but the lack of perception of surroundings is common

True; women are more tuned in to sexually intimidating body language and I spotted him straight away. We are trained to spot risks. Though in a packed tube I don’t think I would have been the only one to notice the porn.
