The waters where they live and hunt are polluted. This was the first calf born alive in a long while. It might be another long while until the next one is born with yet again little chance of survival. This is the consequence of human negligence and greed.

This calf was actually stillborn. A 3yo in the same group was injected with broad spectrum antibiotics this week. Salmon stocks are down and these whales are truly struggling. Very sad.

"A team member with the research centre first spotted the newborn calf swimming with his mother, a whale dubbed 'J35', (...). But the calf appeared to die after about a half hour when the team of researchers arrived, the US based centre said." (BBC News 27 July 2018)...

This was reported two days after the calf died. Now that mother has let go of its body after mourning period, it sank in the waters between Canada and the US border meaning that the research centre needs permission to reach it and perform necropcy to establish the cause of death.

The cause of death might be salmon mother fed on, that has been poisoned by chemicals dumped into ocean. Or the calf could have consumed bits of rubbish floating on the surface and choked. Whichever way you look at it there is a strong possibility the cause is man-made.

I absolutely agree. Our oceans are horribly abused places, and apex predators like the orca are forced to fight for survival. They can't win, unless we also fight for their survival.

How can people hunt and kill these amazing creatures? I will not holiday in Japan because of whaling. Stop 🛑 whaling.

Amazing how this mother whale refused to let her dead baby go yet humans abort their babies & don't care enough to bury them but allow clinics to dispose of like trash.Fully developed babies w/souls,10 fingers,10 toes, ready 2 live but not given a chance. That's what breaks my💔.
