Michael Binyon is a legend; a walking, talking depository of wisdom, experience & institutional memory that all newsrooms need & dispense with at their peril. He was also once kind to a young reporter doing his first shift on the Times Foreign Desk. #TheTimes

Every day I walk past this statue & inscription on the wall of the BBC. Not a bad mission statement to ponder as one begins the working day. Never ceases to be topical.

Is this official Ukrainian account getting used as part of a briefing war between the former UK PM and the current one? Seems an odd way to characterise things a few days after the UK committed modern tanks in support of Ukraine

A great sadness. Few contemporary writers could capture the sea as vividly as Jonathan Raban.

Sad to read that Jonathan Raban has died. Beautiful writing animated by a warm, intelligent spirit. His 'Coasting' and 'Passage to Juneau' are two of my favourite non-fiction books. Nice obit here from the Guardian theguardian.com/books/2023/jan

New: UK Foreign Secretary urges Iran to halt planned execution of British-Iranian national. Alireza Akbari, former Iranian defence minister, has reportedly been sentenced to death, accused of spying for the UK. He says he's been tortured into a forced confession.

Iran must halt the execution of British-Iranian national Alireza Akbari and immediately release him. This is a politically motivated act by a barbaric regime that has total disregard for human life.

Further example of the complete collapse of transparency & quality when it comes to ministerial answers to written parliamentary questions. estimates the cost of answering a written question is £750 a pop. So this is Ministers & SPADs effectively 🔥 taxpayer money

Q: To ask His Majesty's Government what assistance they are providing to those who have fled Hong Kong and are claiming asylum status in the UK; and of those applicants, how many are women. A: The UK has a proud record of providing protection for people who need it. Thanks.
