This is what it means in my opinion. Truth is bitter. Elders will always say the no matter how bitter they may appear. You only get to enjoy the fruit of their words after a while, may be after experiencing the real truth.

That most times you may not fully understand & appreciate the importance of what an elder has said or advised you until in the future; perhaps after you may have had to go through an experience where you refer back to the ‘words’ the elder said to you.

Personally, I take "elder" to mean someone with intelligence and wisdom not anything to do with age. Therefore, The words of an intelligent human will be so deep with meaning that you will need to take some time and contemplate on them to realise the truth in the words.
