Ghanaian traditional leaders have banned girls from crossing a river while they are menstruating, which they say is a "directive" from a river god. Pupils have to cross the River Ofin to get to school, meaning girls would miss class. http://bbc.in/2Fq5XQL pic.twitter.com/2B2RFbdkkZ

Crazy! Gender insensitivity! This is the one of the reasons why Mother Africa will never go forward. Shame on the Ghanaian Traditional leaders! Shame on the Ofin River gods!!

It WILL go forward. Africa is not a village, Ade! Why they decide in that river village will not stop African youngsters writing code and launching their start-up. So please, let's have some perspective and drop absolutist generalisations!

Thanks Chofamba for those encouraging words. One cannot but go emotional when you look at how backward our tradition can be at times. It's a crime against humanity when you deny a girl her fundamental right to education just because of a change in her body system. it's crazy!

Sad that this still takes place in 2018! The other day I read women with stretch marks were forbidden from working in immigration. The very process they stigmatize is at the core of giving life. Waiting to hear how @NAkufoAddo responds.

My dear don't mind @BBCAfrica , that decision was taken by just one local tradition authority and has been heavily criticized by most traditional authorities in Ghana, I'm surprised BBCAfrica is bent on tarnishing the image of Ghana.
