Ethiopia's parliament has passed legislation banning the adoption of children by foreigners. The country is a popular destination for families seeking to adopt, with celebrities like Angelina Jolie among those who have adopted children from there. I don't see why would they do that if the process were genuine and authentic. I mean a parent adopting kids who are orphaned to make families out of them can't be much to ask for. You find the same parliament not caring for some of these kids sufferings and now this...

Thank you for these rational comments. If the corruption could be removed from the system, then every child deserves a loving family. Banning adoption to let these children rot and die in orphanages or on the street is cruel.

the parents are being lied to, these kids are being stolen under the pretenses that they’re going to the capital to be educated, and then being sold to foreign couples.

Why are y’all acting like it’s uncommon for Ethiopian parents to be tricked into giving up their chidlren by adoption agencies? This isn’t new news. Plenty of white parents count on those loopholes to gain access to Ethiopian children.

Good it's time to fix in house problems. Just because a foreigner may have large sums of money and are very popular. It doesn't mean or give them the right to adopt children of any country.pic.twitter.com/n5Iu1m0TUT

Good! The American foster care system full of children who need a loving home and family (not sure what it’s like in other countries, but I’m sure those children need homes too). It’s been time to shut the white savior complex down.

Many of the children are actually being sold rather than adopted- the parents are often tricked into giving their children away. This helps stops that process

This is fighting corruption. And it’s not banning adoption to people there. it’s almost like those Native American ads encouraging only natives to adopt natives. But this is actually stopping kidnapping and children being sold without real cause

But there are over 5 million kids on the streets of Ethiopia the people and gov can't take care off. What do they want to do about that? The law makers of this ban are the one corrupted so why are they creating more laws to make our country worst than it already is? SMH

The law makers themselves could be corrupt. 5 million kids is just the amount that are orphaned . Before, Ethiopians were not pushed as heavily to adopt those children. There are capable people in that country that can , and now that agenda is going to be pushed.

You’d rather them be SOLD ? Than have the possibility of pushing the agenda to adopt these children in their own country

Adoption isn't selling. When American kids are adopted money is exchanged as well for legal fees and caring for the child. But I get there's corruption anyway... maybe this can be tackled better than banning adoption better. Maybe improve monitoring of the services.
