Would you work an extra 30 minutes a day for no extra pay? 🤔 In Burkina Faso civil servants have been told they must now work an extra half-hour every day because their performance isn't good enough and they are often late for work. 🇧🇫 http://bbc.in/2Ad0Tvb pic.twitter.com/0ZPKi53AQa

Methinks proper supervision & performance targets will help solve the underperformance not staying long at work.

According to the story, over half of workers arrive late to work “because they have to travel long distances from their homes to work and must also drop their children off at school on their way to the office”. Now, if this doesn’t get addressed, how would things change?

If this was implemented in Nigeria some workers would have to work 3-6 extra hours

True that. But if they could waste 7 or less hours, what's the assurance that they would do any work in the extra hours? Proper supervision, target setting and commitment on the part of the worker is what is needed. Also the civil service in Nigeria is overstaffed.

Might be due to transport. I would do the 30mins extra, for the sake of feeding the family & cut my 1 hour lunch break to 30minutes. That way, I still leave on time. It's a waste of time complaining. #Africa #BurkinaFaso

This is common in Ghana especially the public sector where people go to work at 11am only to gossip and close at 2pm. In the private sector you cant do this but they also make workers work overtine without pay.

I'm paid to work 7.5hrs a day. 30mins paid break. If they pay and I don't put in the hrs that were PAID FOR, then yes, I have ripped them off and should have to put in the hrs or pay back the $$. Would you be happy about paying for something and getting nothing?

How is it "extra" whrn they are often late?? Trying to instigate the mass? If there is poor performance and you are getting paid for what you are NOT doing then they should be punished

That’s standard practice in the UK. My unpaid overtime last month was 48 hours, which is low.

If they arrive late then the 30 mins only compensates for earlier time they were not yet at work when they were supposed to be, not extra work for no pay.

Complete failure of their management system. Strategies and systems should be put in place to manage employees to make them accountable of their actions part of which should include withholding pay and other forms of appropriate disciplinary actions

That's a quick way to further employee disengagement. Wouldn't leadership development and performance training be more effective?
