Today’s African #proverb: Whoever steals a bicycle is on their way to the market to chase someone who stole a fish. A Bini proverb from Nigeria sent by Ameze Ogbeide in Edinburgh, UK How do you interpret this proverb?

I think some proverbs are better understood in their original language. When translated to English in some way they change a little.

I see hypocrisy! A bigger thief chasing after a smaller one. Same as the biblical admonition to remove the log in one’s eyes, in order to see well to remove the speck in another’s. Typical of treasury looters prosecuting common thieves!

Both thieves will be caught. He forgot that he stole the bicycle and as he chases the fish thief, he too will be caught.

This is not an African proverb for the simple reason that we didn’t have bicycles in our traditional transport system

It shows peoples level of hypocrisy (to my understanding).you are a thief who stole a bicycle and yet you will be going after another thief who stole a fish. This depicts one of the ills of my nation.

It basically means fish has great value attached to it in the locality. You can't take someone's fish. Take anything else!
