How good are you at spotting fake news? BBC Research across Kenya and Nigeria has found that people are more interested in being first to share news on social media than making sure it is accurate, despite being aware of the consequences of disinformation. #BeyondFakeNewspic.twitter.com/8HwSuSWdT2

Sad but this is true! The more fantastic the story the bigger the desire to spread it. And how challenging to sift out the truth from layer and layer of #FakeNews

A lot of Nigerians will just run with any story - we are giving the old age amebos a good run for their money as a country; we thrive on rumours, gossips and conjectures. Even worse, correcting them or pointing out it’s #fakenews is near impossible.

I've had to block some people on whatsapp, after several warnings. I don't understand how people share info without making any attempt to verify the authenticity. However, what I would like to know, is what the people who start those fake news, stand to gain?🤔

Maybe it never occurred to people that social media might not be the best venue for accurate news? However, I do find it ironic comedy that whilst the BBC decries "fake news" on SM, they publish a site on that very platform💁‍♀️

This is about some Indians and Kenyans who are tired of being terrorized by terrorists, and are speaking out, so the MSM had to coalesce around a restructured message that the whiners are just big bad ugly nationalists spreading fake news.

Even some of the country’s biggest tabloids are involved in this abnormality: in their bid to survive and compete in the digital-wrought all-comers, very random and disrupted news environment.
