Young girls are being sold off to men as old as 90 in "money marriages", an illegal practice that still occurs among south-east Nigeria's Becheve people.pic.twitter.com/UJh2PAlOEI

Money wives: The Nigerian girls sold to repay debts
Through a tradition called "money marriage", some young girls are being used as currency in a type of modern slavery among southern Nigeria's Becheve community.

Please do we not have pedophiles in the western world too? Why has western media stereotyped Africa with only negative news. Some young girls in high schools are winning trophies in science and literature in Nigeria, why do we not see such news with western media?

This is why Africa still bleeds. Thinking like yours. The first thing you should do is be outraged that this is happening on our soil. Secondly why the government hasn't stopped it, and finally why local media hasn't covered it. I would rather see negative news if it saves lives.

Bless u Tina. If u get to their place many of the things we complain about here, they hav it 2. Yet we don’t know cause nobody talks about them. Their media will never carry such news. They become power anytime Africa is mentioned. If only one person can hear me, I’m ok.

Until you realise that to them, SE and SS are like identical twins that can't be easily told apart. Just like "East and west Germany," a president I know comes to mind.

The issue is not whether it's happening in the Igbo speaking part of Nigeria or not but to shed light on an unlawful practice. We should condemn it and demand our governments action in that area. No child anywhere in the world should be forced into a union.

BBC, are you sure of the location you are quoting here. Igbos are the indigenous people of Southeast Nigeria. This practice is not obtainable in our lands. Where are these your Becheve people?

Thank you for sharing this story. The struggle for womens right is universal. What can be done to liberate these young women from oppressive cultures? From time immemorial – cultures tend to suppress/undermine women, be it in Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East etc.

All of a sudden we're south-south and southeast 😂 Nigerians never learn! Instead of us to use this information positively, we're arguing about geopolitical affiliations.

Nnewi is my home town and we don't have such thing here, BBC should be specific and not generalized, the voice from background is not language of south eastern Nigeria, 98% of south eastern Nigeria speaks IGBO.
