Today’s African #proverb: Your son is not your father. A Somali proverb sent by Abdirahman, Mogadishu, Somalia. How do you interpret this proverb? https://bbc.in/2taFGRX pic.twitter.com/EyI3PEJxng

Don't over burden your children with expectation that they should provide for you as if they are your parents.

This is a bad translation, but a great source of Somali sayings can be found in this book published in 1974. The last pic contains a similar saying, but we included others in Somali, English and Arabic. Suggestive that Somalia was once a thriving society.pic.twitter.com/CG5QEkxt7H

It doesn’t. I think the English translation is off, but could they’ve meant the proverb, Nimaad dhashay kuma dhalin? That the only one I could think of 😅

It means "The kindness and care of parents towards their children do not always get reciprocated by them, so be aware of that "parents"! ".

It means that the way father feels so kind and so sacrificing to his son is not true with the son.

I think it’s a very complicated proverb that only Somalis understand but let me try decipher it. ‘You care and worry about your child constantly but he doesn’t. You father cares and worries about you but u don’t’

If your father was too harsh to you when you were small, don‘t see him in your son, giving back the harshness to a vulnerable child.

True, do not expect your son to fulfill your need for fatherly love, especially women. Release them to take care of their own family and build a life for themselves. Easier said than done.
