#FRA has been called Africa's sixth team at the World Cup as it has 14 players who could qualify to play for an African nation. But #BEL also vie for African support as it has 8 players in the same position, including star striker @RomeluLukaku9 https://bbc.in/2u0ocbf pic.twitter.com/Q3ALmHhCfN

Imagine if they chose to play for Congo, maybe it would have been Congo in quarterfinals instead

France/Belgium have all the African support they can get. Kudos to the players. Kudos to France/Belgium for bringing out the best in the boys and an opportunity to showcase their God given talent.

This illustrates the quality of African players; local based ones only lack discipline and patience.

Congo would have had a neat squad. Too bad these players almost always choose the European side.

If a lot of these players chose to play for the nations of their parents, DR Congo, Guinea, and Algeria would be among the best teams in the world. #FRA #BEL #WorldCup

I agree, but why do they choose #Fra or #Bel rather than Algeria or Congo? Is it b/c they feel more 🇫🇷than 🇨🇩, is it b/c they grew up there as athletes, is it b/c of higher visibility and chances to win? People say Europe "steals" African players, I don't see how in this case

Do you think Lukaku would like to fly from Manchester halfway to the south pole and travel to DR Congo several times a season to play #worldcup qualifiers? Or is it easier for him to make a quick dash to and from Belgium for the same purpose?

Oh it's easier for sure, but a lot of African players who play in Europe do fly to Africa for the African Cup of Nations and for the qualifiers. I was just wondering what, for those who play for European countries, dictated their choice. Not criticizing them at all.

The reason they fly to #Africa for qualifiers is usually (not always) that they don`t have EU citizenship, and/or they are not good enough to get into thw #French or #Belgian teams. There are outliers of course (such as Koulibaly of #SEN who could have played for #FRA). #worldcup

#NGA might be casting envious eyes at #ENG which has Alli, Barkley, Abraham, plus Lookman in age grade teams. Mind you, #Nigeria did “nick” Iwobi and Moses back off England!

so moral of the story is, the best play for European teams while those that don't get called up come back home. Nice
